The Saunders–Paine House is a special old home located in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. It was built around 1830. This house is a great example of the Federal style of architecture. It's also known as a Cape style house.
The first known owner was Charles Saunders. He married Mary Cole Paine. Her family was very important to the area. They even gave the name "Paine Hollow" to the place. In 1998, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a historically important building.
What Does the House Look Like?
The Saunders–Paine House faces south. It sits on the north side of Paine Hollow Road. This road used to lead to an important landing spot in the 1800s.
Outside the House
The house is one and a half stories tall. It is made of wood. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides. This is called a side-gable roof. There is a chimney in the middle of the house. The outside walls are covered with wood siding. The foundation is made of brick.
The front of the house is very balanced. It has five sections, or "bays." There are two windows on each side of the front door. The front door has special decorations. It has flat columns on each side. Above the door, there is a window with five small panes of glass. The windows have simple frames. A small addition was built at the back of the house for the kitchen.
Inside the House
The inside of the house has a traditional layout. It's called a center-chimney plan. A narrow staircase goes upstairs from the entrance hall. This hall is right in front of the chimney. There are large rooms on both sides of the chimney.
The kitchen is located behind the chimney. There are also small rooms in the back corners. Upstairs, you will find two bedrooms. The best room is on the west side of the chimney. It has beautiful carved wood panels. It also has a fireplace mantel with decorative columns. The ceilings are smooth. The floors are made of wide wooden planks.
Who Lived Here?
Charles Saunders married Mary Cole Paine. This happened sometime before 1837. It is believed they moved into this house around that time.
Mary was the granddaughter of Thomas Paine. He was the first person to settle in this area in 1809. Many members of the Paine family lived here. Because of this, the area became known as "Paine Hollow." The Saunders family and their descendants owned the house for a long time. They kept it in the family well into the 1900s.
