The Saxifragaceae is a family of flowering plants. Think of a "family" in plants like a group of relatives. This plant family has about 460 different kinds, called species. These species are grouped into 36 smaller groups, called genera.
Most plants in the Saxifrage family are herbs. This means they do not have woody stems like trees or shrubs. They often have leaves that grow in a circle close to the ground. This circle is called a basal whorl. From the center of these leaves, a stem grows tall. It holds a group of flowers, known as a flower cluster, high above the leaves. In Europe, you can find 12 different genera from this plant family.
