The School of Art Gallery (SOAG) is a cool public art museum. It's part of the University of Manitoba School of Art. You can find it in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Until 2011, it was known as Gallery One One One.

This gallery has a special collection of art. It focuses on artists from Manitoba and all over Canada. There's also the FitzGerald Study Centre. This center helps people learn about Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald. He was an early leader at the School of Art. He was also a member of Canada's famous Group of Seven artists. The gallery also hosts exciting art shows. These shows feature art from Canada and other countries.

The School of Art Gallery works with many important groups. These include the Canadian Museums Association and the Virtual Museum of Canada. It also connects with other university art galleries in Canada.

History of the Gallery

When the Gallery Started

The gallery first opened its doors in 1965. Back then, it was called Gallery One One One. It was created to be a professional art display center. It was part of the University of Manitoba School of Art.

Moving to a New Home

In 2012, the School of Art and the gallery moved. They found a new home in the Art Research Technology Laboratory (ARTlab). This building is on the University's Fort Garry campus. When they moved, the gallery changed its name. It became the School of Art Gallery, which is what it's called today.

What Art Does the Gallery Collect?

A Growing Collection of Art

The School of Art Gallery collects many different types of art. They have both old (historical) and new (contemporary) artworks. Their collection is always growing. It now has more than 4,100 pieces of art. This makes it the biggest art collection at the University of Manitoba.

Two Main Art Collections

The gallery's art collection is split into two main parts:

  • The FitzGerald Study Collection: This part is all about Lionel LeMoine FitzGerald. It also includes art by his friends and fellow artists. These were the artists from Canada's "Group of Seven".
  • The Permanent Collection: This part has a wide range of art. It includes both historical and contemporary works. You'll find art from Canada and other countries here.
