Scipione Pulzone (born 1544 – died 1598) was an important painter from Naples. He was also known as Il Gaetano. He lived during the late Italian Renaissance, a time when art and culture were booming in Italy.

Pulzone's art was a bit different from the popular style of his time, called Mannerism. He mostly worked in Rome, but also painted in Naples and Florence. People believe he learned to paint from Jacopino del Conte in Rome.

He was especially famous for his portraits, which are paintings of people. He painted important figures like Pope Gregory XIII and members of the powerful Medici family, including Francesco I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, Eleanor de' Medici, and Marie de' Medici. Pulzone also created religious paintings for churches in Rome.

One of his paintings, Mater Divinae Providentiae (Mother of Divine Providence), painted around 1580, inspired a special devotion in the Roman Catholic Church to Our Lady of Providence.

Pulzone's Artistic Style

Where Did Pulzone Work?

Pulzone worked for royal families in Naples and Florence. He also painted in Rome, where he created portraits of the popes of his time. These included Pius V and Gregory XIII.
