Sclerder Abbey facts for kids
Sclerder Abbey (say "Sklerder Abby") is a special place in Cornwall, England. It's located between the towns of Looe and Polperro. This building used to be a monastery for Carmelite nuns. Today, it's home to a Roman Catholic community called Chemin Neuf. This community welcomes Christians from different backgrounds to live and pray together. The Chemin Neuf community started in France in 1973 and now has about 2,000 members in over 30 countries!
A Look at Sclerder Abbey's History
Sclerder Abbey was first built in 1843 by a group of nuns called the Dames de la Retraite. Over the years, many different religious groups have lived there. For example, Franciscan monks and nuns, and Carmelite nuns have all called Sclerder Abbey home.
From 1981 until 2014, Carmelite nuns from Quidenham lived at the Abbey. In September 2014, the Chemin Neuf community moved in. The local Catholic Bishop, Mark O’Toole, held a special church service to welcome them. He also thanked the Carmelite nuns for their many years of prayer and service.
What Happens at Sclerder Abbey Today?
The Chemin Neuf community is slowly making improvements to the Abbey. It's a very old and important building, officially listed as Grade II. This means it has special historical value. The Abbey also has a beautiful garden that visitors can enjoy.
The community at Sclerder Abbey often holds special events and retreats. These are like short breaks where people can come to pray, learn, and relax. Both groups and individuals are welcome to attend these events.
Sclerder Abbey is an important place for the Roman Catholic community in Cornwall. Church services, called Mass, are held there regularly. You can attend Mass on Saturdays, Sundays, and Wednesdays at 9:00 AM.
