The Scottish Commercial Motormen's Union was a special group called a trade union in the United Kingdom. A trade union is like a club for workers. It helps them get fair pay, good working conditions, and a safe place to work. This union was for people who drove vehicles for their job. It joined with a bigger union, the Transport and General Workers' Union, in 1971.

A Look Back: The Union's Story

Starting Out: The Carters' Association

The union began in 1898. It was first known as the Scottish Carters' Association. Carters were people who drove horse-drawn carts. In 1901, a person named Hugh Lyon started working for the union to help it grow. The next year, he became the general secretary, which is like the main leader. At that time, the union was in trouble. It owed a lot of money and only had about 300 members.

Hugh Lyon spent his first five months helping workers in Falkirk who were on strike. A strike is when workers stop working to demand better conditions. This strike was very successful. Even though the union's main office almost closed, the success of the strike convinced the union leaders to keep Lyon.

Growing and Changing

In 1904, Hugh Lyon helped the union get official recognition from the Glasgow Town Council. This meant the city leaders would listen to the union. In the early 1910s, the union won several more strikes. This helped it become popular across the country. By 1912, it had about 12,000 members, which was its highest number.

In 1908, the union changed its name to the Scottish Horse and Motormen's Association. This new name was meant to help them get drivers of motor vans to join. However, Hugh Lyon thought that motor vehicles were just a passing trend. He believed the union should focus on carters who drove horses.

Challenges and New Leadership

Because Lyon didn't focus on motor vehicle drivers, the union's membership went down in the 1920s and 1930s. Things got worse because Lyon refused to let the union join a larger group called the Transport Workers' Federation. This led to many arguments with other unions about which workers belonged to which union.

Finally, in 1936, the union's leaders decided they had enough. They removed Hugh Lyon from his job.

Who Led the Union?

Here are the main leaders, called General Secretaries, of the union over the years:

  • 1898: John Sampson
  • 1902: Hugh Lyon
  • 1936: Robert Taylor
  • 1944: John Brannigan
  • 1959: Alex Kitson
