A state seal is a very important symbol for any state. It's like a state's official signature. History of Tennessee's Great Seal
The idea for an official seal for Tennessee was first mentioned in the state's very first rulebook, called the Constitution of the State of Tennessee. This happened on February 6, 1796, when Tennessee officially became a state.
Even though the Constitution said there should be a seal, the actual design process didn't begin right away. It took a few years for people to start working on what the seal would look like. The work on the design finally began on September 25, 1801.
What Does the Seal Show?
The Great Seal of Tennessee has a circular shape, like a coin. Around the outside edge, you can read the words "The Great Seal of the State of Tennessee." This makes it clear what the seal represents.
Also on the outer ring, you'll see a date: "Feb. 6th, 1796." This date is very important because it marks the day Tennessee joined the United States as a state. In some of the designs that came later, the month and day were removed, so only the year "1796" is shown. The center of the seal also contains symbols that represent different parts of Tennessee's economy and history, such as agriculture and commerce.
