Sector 7 is a super cool wordless picture book created and illustrated by David Wiesner. A wordless book tells a story using only pictures, without any words at all! This amazing book was published in 1999 by Clarion Books. It was so well-loved that it received a special award called the Caldecott Honor in 2000 for its fantastic illustrations.
A Trip to the Clouds
The story of Sector 7 starts with a school field trip to the famous Empire State Building in New York City. A group of students is visiting the observatory, which is a high place where you can look out over the city.
One boy on the trip makes a new friend: a friendly cloud! This cloud takes the boy on an incredible journey. He is whisked away to a secret place called Sector 7.
Inside Sector 7
Sector 7 is like a giant train station, but for clouds! It's where clouds are stored and organized. When the boy arrives, he finds a group of young clouds who seem a bit bored.
The boy, being very creative, starts drawing new ideas for the clouds. He draws amazing designs that look like different ocean creatures, such as fish and jellyfish. These drawings are like blueprints, showing the clouds how to change their shapes.
The young clouds are super excited! They start trying out these new designs, changing their shapes into all sorts of fun sea animals. They love their new, playful forms.
Cloud Trouble and New Ideas
However, the older, adult clouds who run Sector 7 are not happy. They discover the young clouds playing around and changing shapes. They are quite upset about this "misbehavior."
The adult clouds then take the boy back to the observatory. But something interesting happens. When they look closer at the boy's drawings, they start to see how creative and wonderful these new cloud shapes are. They begin to admire the possibilities!
As the children head home on their school bus, they look out at the New York skyline. What do they see? The sky is now filled with clouds shaped like all kinds of aquarium fish and ocean creatures! It seems the adult clouds decided to have some fun too.
