Seleucus III, also known as Seleucus Ceraunus, was a young king of the Seleucid Kingdom. This kingdom was a large empire in ancient times, part of the Hellenistic world. He was the oldest son of King Seleucus II Callinicus and Queen Laodice II. Seleucus III ruled for a short time, from December 225 BC to April/June 223 BC.
A Young King's Story
Seleucus III was born around 243 BC. His birth name was Alexander. He was named after his great-uncle, a Seleucid official also named Alexander. When he became king after his father, he changed his name to Seleucus.
He ruled for less than two years, from 225 to 223 BC. During his short time as king, he continued a war his father had started. This war was in Asia Minor against Attalus I of Pergamon. Sadly, Seleucus III was killed in Anatolia by some members of his own army. He was only about 20 years old.
Seleucus III had two special names. His official byname was Soter, which means "Saviour". His nickname was Ceraunus, which means "Thunderbolt".
