What is the Czech Senate?
The Senate is one of the two main parts of the Parliament of the Czech Republic. Think of it as a team that works alongside another team (the Chamber of Deputies) to create and approve laws. Its job is to check new laws and make sure they are good for the country.
How Senators are Chosen
The Senate has 81 members, and each one is called a Senator. These Senators are chosen by people voting in different areas of the country. Each area, or "constituency," picks one Senator.
Voting System Explained
Senators are chosen using a special voting method called the two-round system. Here's how it works:
- In the first round of voting, people choose their favorite candidate.
- If one candidate gets more than half of all the votes, they win right away!
- If no one gets more than half, then the two candidates who got the most votes go to a second round.
- In this second round, the person who gets the most votes wins the seat.
How Long Senators Serve
Once a Senator is chosen, they serve for six years. This is called their term of office. This long term helps them gain experience and work steadily on important laws.
Where the Senate Meets
The main place where the Senate does its work is the Wallenstein Palace in Prague. This historic building is where Senators meet to discuss laws, hold debates, and make decisions for the Czech Republic.
History of the Senate
The office of the Senate was officially created in December 1992. Since then, it has played a key role in the government of the Czech Republic, helping to shape the country's future through its laws.
