Early Life and Education
Serge Dassault was the younger son of Madeleine and Marcel Dassault. He inherited the Dassault Group from his father. His parents had Jewish backgrounds but later became Roman Catholics.
In 1929, his father started the company that is now called Dassault Aviation. During the Second World War, Serge was jailed. This happened because his father was sent to a camp for refusing to help the German aviation industry.
Serge studied at the Lycée Janson-de-Sailly. He earned engineering degrees from two famous schools: the École Polytechnique and Supaéro. Later, he also got a special business degree from HEC Paris.
Leading a Big Business
After his father passed away in 1986, Serge Dassault took over the company. He worked with other leaders to help the company grow. His group also owned a well-known newspaper called Le Figaro.
The Dassault family also owns other businesses. These include a winery, properties in Paris, and an art auction house.
His Time in Politics
Serge Dassault was a member of a political party called the Union for a Popular Movement. His son, Olivier Dassault, was also a politician. Serge served as the mayor of Corbeil-Essonnes, a city near Paris.
In 2004, he became a senator. As a senator, he often spoke about his conservative views. He believed that France's taxes and rules for workers made it hard for businesses to succeed. In 2005, he helped open an Islamic cultural center and mosque in Corbeil-Essonnes.
Family and Later Life
Serge Dassault married Nicole Raffel on 5 July 1950. They had four children together: Olivier, Laurent, Thierry, and Marie-Hélène.
Serge Dassault passed away suddenly in his office in Paris on 28 May 2018. He was 93 years old and died from heart failure.
