Early Life and Film Career

Sergei Yutkevich started working when he was a teenager, putting on puppet shows. From 1921 to 1923, he studied theater under a famous director named Vsevolod Meyerhold.

Later, he helped create a group called the Factory of the Eccentric Actor (FEKS). This group focused on circus acts and music hall performances. He began working in films in the 1920s and started directing his own movies in 1928.

His films were often more cheerful than many other Russian movies of the time. This was because he was inspired by American slapstick comedy, which uses exaggerated physical humor. However, he also directed serious historical films, docudramas (movies based on real events), and biopics (movies about real people's lives).

Famous Films and Awards

Sergei Yutkevich won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Director twice. He won for his film Othello in 1956. He won again for Lenin in Poland in 1966.

One of his later films, Lenin in Paris, is also very well known. He was also a judge at the Moscow International Film Festival several times. He was a jury member in 1959 and 1961, and he was the President of the Jury in 1967.

Sergei Yutkevich passed away in Moscow on April 23, 1985, at the age of 80.
