Sergio Fajardo Valderrama (born 19 June 1956) is a Colombian politician and mathematician. He first became involved in politics in 2003. That year, he was elected Mayor of Medellín, which is the second-largest city in Colombia. Medellín is also the capital of the Antioquia region.
Fajardo served as mayor of Medellín from 2003 to 2007. He is well-known for helping to change the city. Medellín went from a place with many problems to a successful example of city growth. In 2010, Fajardo ran for Vice President with Antanas Mockus. They finished second in the election. From 2012 to 2016, Fajardo was the governor of Antioquia. He describes himself as a practical politician who does not follow one specific political idea. Many people see him as a centrist politician. This means he is not strongly on the left or right side of politics. He is also not connected to the older, traditional political parties in Colombia.
In 2017, Fajardo announced he would run for president in 2018. He finished third in the first round of the 2018 Colombian presidential election. In 2022, he ran for president again in the 2022 Colombian presidential election. He finished fourth in the first round.

Early Life and Education
Sergio Fajardo was born and grew up in Medellín, Colombia. His birthday is June 19, 1956. His father, Raúl Fajardo Moreno, was an architect. He designed the famous Coltejer Building in Medellín.
Fajardo finished high school at Colegio Benedictino. After that, he moved to Bogotá. There, he studied mathematics at the Universidad de los Andes. He earned both his first degree and a master's degree in mathematics. Later, Fajardo went to the United States to continue his studies. He earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Political Career and Achievements
Before starting his political career at age 40, Fajardo was a teacher. He taught mathematical logic at the University of the Andes. He also taught at the National University of Colombia. He was part of important groups like the National Council for Sciences. He also worked with the Peace Commission in Antioquia.
Mayor of Medellín (2003–2007)
In 2003, Sergio Fajardo became the first independent mayor of Medellín. This means he ran without being part of a major political party. During his four years as mayor, he brought big changes to the city. Medellín used to have a lot of violence and problems. Fajardo helped turn it into a city known for its modern development. Because of his work, he was named the Best Mayor of Colombia in 2007. He also received other awards from Colombia and other countries.
Governor of Antioquia (2012–2016)
In 2010, Fajardo was the candidate for Vice President. He ran with Antanas Mockus, who was also an independent politician and mathematician. From 2012 to 2016, Fajardo was elected governor of the state of Antioquia. During his time as governor, Antioquia became a leader in good government. It was very open about its actions and how it spent money. This was noted by national organizations in Colombia. In 2015, he was named the best governor in the country by the group Colombia Líder.
Presidential Campaigns (2018 and 2022)
Fajardo launched his independent campaign for president in 2018. He was supported by a group called Coalición Colombia. This group included the Green Party and his own movement, Compromiso Ciudadano. In the first round of elections, Fajardo received more than 4.6 million votes. He was very close to moving on to the second round. In 2022, he ran for president again.
Current Work and Views
Currently, Sergio Fajardo is a professor. He teaches at the School of Government and Public Transformation in Mexico. He also teaches at the School of Political Formation of Compromiso Ciudadano in Colombia. He is a member of the Inter-American Dialogue, a group that discusses important issues in the Americas. Fajardo aims to represent a "Third Way" in politics. This idea is about finding new solutions that are not strictly left or right. He wants to move past the old political divisions.
