Service, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Service is a small, quiet place in eastern Crawford County, Missouri. It's known as an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

What is Service, Missouri?

Service is a special kind of place called an unincorporated community. This means it's not officially a city or town with its own mayor or police department. Instead, the county government takes care of things like roads and services for the people living there. These communities are often small and spread out, with homes and perhaps a few buildings.

Where is Service Located?

This community is found in the eastern part of Crawford County. It sits near a small stream that flows into Courtois Creek. Imagine a map: Service is on the east side of this creek. A main road, Missouri Route 8, passes by about half a mile to the southwest. If you travel a little bit northwest, you'd find the community of Butts. About four miles southeast, you'd reach Berryman.

A Look at Service's Past

Service has a bit of history, even if it's a small place. Back in the 1940s, there was a building called the Service School right in the area. This was likely where children from the community went to learn. The community also had its own post office for a short time. It opened in 1886 and helped people send and receive mail until 1896. Interestingly, no one really knows how the name "Service" came to be! It's a bit of a mystery from the past.
