Setesdal is a beautiful valley and a historic area in southern Norway. It is found in the Aust-Agder County. This region is made up of several smaller areas called municipalities. These include Bykle, Valle, Bygland, Iveland, and Evje og Hornnes.

The long Otra river is like the main road of Setesdal. It flows all the way through the valley. The river starts high up on the Hardangervidda plateau in Telemark county. It then travels south until it reaches the sea near the city of Kristiansand. The historic Setesdal area begins at Evje and stretches north to a farm called Bjåen, near the border of Telemark.

Discovering Setesdal's Geography

Setesdal is divided into different parts. The northern part is called Øvre (Upper) Setesdal. This area is mostly within the municipality of Bykle. The southern part is known as Nedre (Lower) Setesdal. It includes the municipalities of Iveland, Evje & Hornnes, and Bygland. Right in the middle of the valley, you'll find Valle municipality.

Traveling Through the Valley

A main road, Norwegian National Road 9, runs right through Setesdal. This road makes it easy to explore the valley. It connects the different towns and villages. The road follows the path of the Otra river, offering great views.
