The Seven Star Grange is a special old building in Troy, Maine. It's located at 696 Bangor Road. This building was constructed way back in 1876.

It is one of the oldest Grange halls in the entire state of Maine. For many years, it has been a very important place for the people of Troy. It serves as a community center for social events and meetings. Because of its history, the Seven Star Grange was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2011.

What is the Seven Star Grange Building Like?

The Seven Star Grange building is in the middle of Troy. You can find it on the south side of Bangor Road, which is also known as United States Route 202. It's close to where Bangor Road meets Rogers Road.

Building Design and Features

This building is a tall, two-story structure. It is made of wood and has a pointed roof, called a gable roof. The outside walls are covered with clapboard siding. The building sits on a strong foundation made of granite.

The front of the building has windows spaced out evenly on the second floor. There are also windows on the attic level. On the first floor, there are windows on each side of a double door. Another single door is near the corner on the right side. The corners of the building have special flat columns called pilasters. These add to its classic look.

Inside the Grange Hall

The original part of the building is four sections deep. A two-story addition was later built onto the back. Inside, the main areas are a large meeting and dining hall on the first floor. Upstairs, on the second floor, there is an auditorium. This auditorium even has its own stage!

History of the Seven Star Grange

The Seven Star Grange group was started in 1874. This was just two years after the Patrons of Husbandry began forming chapters in Maine. The Patrons of Husbandry is also known as "The Grange." It's a group that helps farmers and their families.

Building Construction and Changes

The building you see today was finished in 1876. When it first opened, it had rooms for meetings. It also had a small cooperative store. These stores were common for Grange organizations back then. They helped members buy things together.

Later, in 1931, the stage was added to the auditorium. This made it even better for performances and events. At some point in the 20th century, the space that used to be the store was changed. It became a kitchen for the dining area downstairs. This shows how the building adapted to the community's needs over time.
