Seybold Jewelry Building
The Seybold Building in sunny Miami, Florida.

The Seybold Building is a famous historic building in Miami, Florida. It's known as a big center for jewelry stores. The building was designed by architects Kiehnel and Elliott. It was built in two main parts. The first three floors were finished in 1921. John Seybold, who owned the building, ran a bakery and candy shop there. Later, in 1925, seven more floors were added. Today, the Seybold Building is a special historic landmark in Miami. It's also part of the Downtown Miami Historic District.

A Look Back at the Seybold Building's History

The Seybold Building has a cool history that started with John Seybold. He moved to Miami a long time ago and opened a bakery. Even after his first bakery burned down, he started another one! He then created a shopping area, which people called an "arcade" back then. This arcade eventually grew into the 10-story Seybold Building we see today.

How Jewelers Made It Their Home

In the 1960s, the first jewelry store opened in the building. Jeffrey Buchwald, who came from Hungary, moved his jewelry shop to Miami. His family's business, Buchwald Jewelers, is still there today. Jeff Buchwald remembers visiting the store as a kid. He said that when his family first moved in, there were only a few jewelry shops and many lawyer offices. Over time, more and more jewelers arrived.

A big reason the Seybold Building became a jewelry hub was because many Cuban jewelers moved to the United States. They left their homes and businesses in Cuba and looked for new places to work. Mario's Casting, another family-run jewelry business, came to the U.S. in 1969. Martha Camero, one of the owners, shared that many Cuban jewelers came to downtown Miami in the 1970s. As more jewelers moved into the Seybold Building, the lawyers moved out. Soon, almost every floor was filled with different kinds of jewelry businesses!

What You'll Find Inside Today

Most of the shops in the Seybold Building today are still about jewelry and watches. You can find places that sell diamonds, fix watches, or even cut gemstones. If you need something special or just a watch repair, this Miami landmark is a great place to visit.

From people who set stones to those who plate gold, and from watch repair experts to big jewelry makers, the Seybold Building is full of beautiful items. It's also a place where you can hear amazing stories of people who built new lives and businesses in Miami.

Awards and Recognition

The Seybold Jewelry Building was recognized for its quality. In 2009, the Miami New Times newspaper named it the "Best Place to Buy a Diamond Ring."
