Early Life and Family Connections
Shadrach Garfield James was born in Echuca, Victoria. His father, also named Shadrach Livingstone James, was a well-known Indigenous Australian activist. His mother was Maggie James.

Shadrach James, often called "Shady," was a talented footballer. He played for several teams in Victoria and New South Wales.
Playing for Mooroopna
In 1938, Shady played for the Mooroopna team. He was a fantastic goal kicker. He scored 115 goals during the regular season. He added another 13 goals in the finals. This brought his total to 128 goals for the year. He also played in Mooroopna's grand final team in 1940.
Time with Brocklesby
In 1939, Shady played for the Brocklesby team. He had an incredible game where he kicked 19 goals. This was a new record for the club. He helped Brocklesby win the 1939 Albury & District Football League premiership. In total, he kicked 98 goals in 17 games that year.
Joining Fitzroy Football Club
In 1940, Shady James began training with the Fitzroy team. Fitzroy was part of the Victorian Football League (VFL). He played 18 matches for Fitzroy between 1940 and 1941. Shady was a left-footed player. He was the fourth Indigenous Australian player to join the Fitzroy club. His brother, Rupert, also signed with Fitzroy in 1943.
Later Years in Football
After his time with Fitzroy, Shady continued to play football. In 1946, he became the club secretary and coach for the All Blacks Football Club. He led them to a grand final win. He even kicked nine goals in that final game. Shady kept playing football into the late 1940s. He played for various clubs in the Goulburn Valley and North East Victoria regions.
