The Magadha Empire was located in what is now northern India. Shaishunaga became king around 413 BCE. He ruled until about 395 BCE. He came to power after people rebelled against the previous rulers. Shaishunaga was an official before becoming king. He was succeeded by his son, Kalashoka.

Shaishunaga grew up to become an officer of the state. At one point, he was a viceroy in Varanasi. This was during the rule of King Nagadasaka. Nagadasaka was the last king of the Haryanka dynasty. The people of Magadha were unhappy with the Haryanka dynasty. They revolted and chose Shaishunaga as their new king.

Shaishunaga's reign began around 413 BCE. He ruled for about 18 years. His first capital city was Rajagriha. Vaishali was also an important royal city for him. Later, he decided to move his main capital to Vaishali. Shaishunaga was a strong and successful ruler. He greatly expanded the Magadha Empire.

Expanding the Magadha Empire

One of Shaishunaga's biggest achievements was conquering the Avanti kingdom. He defeated its last king, Nandivardhana. This victory was important for Magadha. It helped Magadha become even more powerful. Political changes in Ujjayini also helped Magadha's success. Shaishunaga also conquered the kingdoms of Kosala and Vatsa. These conquests made the Magadha Empire much larger. Ancient texts called the Puranas mention his rule. They say he placed his son in charge of Varanasi. Shaishunaga himself ruled from Girivraja, also known as Rajagriha.

Legacy

Shaishunaga established a new dynasty. He laid the foundation for a powerful empire. His son, Kalashoka, followed him as king. Kalashoka is also known as Kakavarna. Shaishunaga's rule marked a new era for Magadha. He helped it become one of the most dominant empires.
