About the Story

Robert's Journey to Become a Doctor

The story follows Robert Shannon as he trains to become a doctor. He studies at a hospital called Levenford Infirmary. This hospital is a made-up place, but it is based on a real town in Scotland called Dumbarton.

Love and Challenges

While studying, Robert meets Jean Law. She is also a young medical student. They fall in love, but they face some challenges. Jean belongs to a religious group called the Plymouth Brethren. Robert is a Roman Catholic. Jean becomes upset when she finds out Robert was not completely honest about his past and his religion. Because of this, she decides to end their relationship.

Solving a Medical Mystery

Robert then becomes very interested in a specific disease. This sickness can be caught from infected cows' milk. He spends all his free time researching this mystery illness. He works hard to understand how it spreads and how it affects people. Eventually, he discovers that the disease is called brucellosis. This is a real illness that can make people very sick.

Overcoming Obstacles

After much effort, Robert finally completes his research project. However, he finds out that someone else has already discovered the same information. This news makes him feel very overwhelmed and unwell. He needs time to recover from this disappointment. During this difficult time, Jean takes care of him. As he gets better, they decide to get married.
