About Shantira Jackson
Early Life and Training
Shantira Jackson grew up in Florida. She studied Media and Communication at Florida State University, graduating in 2008. After college, she moved to Chicago. There, she trained and performed at The Second City, a famous comedy theater. She was also part of an improv group called 3Peat. With 3Peat, she helped write, produce, and star in a web video series called 3peat: The Blackening for Comedy Central.
Her Journey in Television
Shantira started her TV career in 2017 as a writer for the BET sketch comedy show 50 Central. A sketch comedy show has short, funny scenes. Later, from 2018 to 2019, she was a writer for Busy Philipps' late-night talk show, Busy Tonight.
She then became both a writer and a consulting producer for the new Saved by the Bell series. A consulting producer helps guide the creative direction of a show. She also writes for The Amber Ruffin Show. For her writing on this show, she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series in 2021. This award recognizes excellent writing for comedy or talk shows.
Recent Projects and Future Shows
In 2021, Shantira worked with Busy Philipps again, this time as a producer and writer for the podcast Busy Philipps Is Doing Her Best. A podcast is like a radio show you can listen to online. She also joined the writing team for the animated series Big Mouth. On Big Mouth, she became an Executive Story Editor, which means she helps manage the stories for the show. She also writes for its spin-off series, Human Resources.
In November 2021, it was announced that a new comedy series she wrote, called Aunties, was picked up by NBC. This means NBC agreed to produce a pilot episode, which is a test episode to see if the show will be made into a full series. The show is based on her own life experiences.
Shantira is also a regular guest on NPR's "Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!". This is a popular radio quiz show where guests answer questions about current events.
