Sharon Ruchman facts for kids
Sharon Ruchman is an American composer and musician who writes classical music. She was born in 1949. Her music has been played in many places, like on TV (WTNH channel 8), at big music events (National Composers Association), and at festivals (Hartford Women Composers Festival).
Her Early Musical Journey
Sharon Ruchman was born in New York. Her great uncle, Rudolph Fuchs, was also a famous musician. He was a violinist who played for President Calvin Coolidge in the 1920s. He was also a concertmaster for a radio station.
Sharon started her musical journey very young. When she was just 5 years old, she was already making up tunes while playing the piano. She began taking piano lessons when she was 8. As she grew up, Sharon also learned to sing, dance, and play the cello. One of her teachers was Rosetta Goodkind, who taught at the famous Juilliard School of Music.
In high school, Sharon continued to develop her singing voice. She performed in school shows and plays. By her junior year, she was chosen to sing in special choirs. These included the All-County Chorus, the All-State Chorus in New York, and the All-Eastern Chorus, which performed in Boston.
Her Music Education
Sharon went to the New England Conservatory of Music. There, she sang and played piano for the Conservatory choir. She graduated in 1971 with a degree in Music Education.
After that, Sharon continued her studies at the Yale School of Music. She earned her Master of Music degree in 1973. While at Yale, she was a soloist in a performance of "Mozart Requiem" with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra. She also sang in other Yale performances and took part in a special summer opera program.
Becoming a Composer
For many years, Sharon taught music. She also raised her family and continued her singing career. In 2006, she went back to the Yale School of Music. There, she studied how to compose music with professor Orianna Webb.
In 2007, Sharon started composing music regularly. Since 2009, she has created at least one music album every year. She writes her own classical music for single instruments and for small groups of instruments called chamber ensembles.
