Shashi Wadhwa was born on July 20, 1948. She is a very important scientist from India. She used to be the head of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi.

Dr. Wadhwa is famous for her work on how the human brain grows and develops. She also uses special microscopes to study tiny parts of the body.

Her Journey in Education

Shashi Wadhwa finished her first university degree in 1970 at Jabalpur Medical College. After that, she went to AIIMS to study even more. There, she earned her master's (MS) and doctorate (PhD) degrees in anatomy.

Dr. Wadhwa worked at the Department of Anatomy at AIIMS for many years. She started as a professor and later became the Dean, which means she was the main leader of the department.

Since 1972, she has taught and trained many students. These students were studying to become doctors or scientists themselves. She has also written many articles and books about her research.

What She Studied

Dr. Wadhwa's main research was about how the human brain and body develop. She was very interested in:

  • How the brain and nervous system grow.
  • Measuring and understanding the shapes of body parts.
  • Using powerful microscopes to see tiny details.

Her laboratory mostly focused on the human brain as it develops. They studied parts like the spinal cord and the visual pathway (how we see). This research helped scientists understand how these parts grow. It also showed when they might be at risk if something goes wrong during development. Her work helped create basic information that other scientists can use to compare with problems or diseases.

Awards and Honors

Dr. Shashi Wadhwa is a respected member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. She has received many awards for her important work.

Some of her major awards include:

  • The Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize in 1990. This is a very important science award in India.
  • The BK Bachhawat Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013.

She is also a member of several important scientific groups, such as:
