The Sheboygan Indian Mound Park is a special public park in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. It's famous for its 18 ancient burial mounds, which are spread out over 15 acres. These mounds were built by Native American people long ago.
A part of the park, called the Kletzien Mound Group, was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981. This means it's recognized as an important historical site in the United States. Even though the park is run by the City of Sheboygan, it's actually surrounded by the Town of Wilson. The park and its mounds are protected by the Wisconsin Burial Sites Preservation Law, which helps keep these important historical places safe.
Protecting Ancient Mounds
In 1967, a person named Julilly House Kohler led a big effort to save these historic Native American mounds. Her hard work helped make the site a county park. In 1968, Kohler also helped create the Sheboygan Indian Mound Park Association, Inc. This group was formed to help protect and care for the park. Thanks to these efforts, people today can still visit and learn about these ancient structures.
