Where is Sheep Music Held?
Sheep Music takes place on a community field called Wentes Meadow. This field is owned by the local town council. You can find it next to the River Lugg and near the edge of Presteigne. Presteigne is a town in Powys, which is in Mid-Wales. You can get there from Joe Deakins Road or the B4355.
What Music Can You Hear?
Many amazing bands have played at Sheep Music over the years. Some of these include Transglobal Underground, Zion Train, The Cat Empire, and Nizlopi. The festival always tries to bring a wide variety of music for everyone to enjoy.
A Rainy Year in 2007
In 2006, Sheep Music took a break. It came back in July 2007, but the weather was very wet! Heavy floods hit the area. The main festival area turned muddy, and the nearby River Lugg started to rise. This meant that the camping fields had to be emptied for safety. Some bands even had trouble getting to the festival because of the flooded roads. Luckily, the festival was not cancelled!
Highlights from 2009
Sheep Music was back in 2009 with more great music. On Friday night, Sicknote played, along with the Hot 8 Brass Band from New Orleans. Saturday night featured the tech-country rock band Yes Sir Boss, who opened for Maroon Town. Sunday was packed with bands like the Destroyers (gypsy punk), 17 Hippies (European big band), and Dub Pistols.
Success in 2012
The 2012 festival was a huge success! It had a mix of fantastic bands, like Lazy Habits and East Park Reggae Collective. Good planning and a bit of luck with the weather helped too. One reviewer said that Sheep Music was their "best weekend this year." They loved its friendly atmosphere and how it cared about good causes.
Pasture Bedtime in 2013
In 2013, Sheep Music held a smaller, two-day event called "Pasture Bedtime." It took place on July 19th and 20th at Wentes Meadow in Presteigne. Friday night featured the Bristol Afro Beat Project and Sheelanagig, with They Say Jump as the main act. On Saturday, you could see Sam Green and the Midnight Feast, Joe Driscoll and Sekou Kouyate, and the headliner OnlyJoe.
How is Sheep Music Organized?
Sheep Music is run by a special group called Sheep Music Ltd. This group is also a registered charity. This means they do good work for the community. Most of the people who help run the festival are volunteers. They work hard in exchange for free entry to the festival.
Besides the main festival, Sheep Music Ltd also organizes other local music events throughout the year. They often happen at places like The Dukes Arms or The Royal British Legion in Presteigne. Sheep Music also supports a youth band called Black Sheep White Sheep. This band meets weekly in the Assembly Rooms in Presteigne.
Because the 2012 festival was so successful, the charity was able to give money to local schools and projects. They gave almost £7,000 to groups like Gladestry Primary School, Kington Little Orchard Nursery, and the Presteigne Youth Project.
