About Shelby Bach: Her Life and Journey
Shelby Randol Trenkelbach was born in Houston, Texas. She grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina. In 2008, she finished her studies at Vassar College. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English.
Early Career and Writing Adventures
After college, Shelby worked for a company that publishes children's books in New York. Later, she decided to focus on writing full-time. She then moved back to Charlotte, North Carolina.
Kirkus Reviews praised her first novel, The Ever Afters #1: Of Giants and Ice. They called it a "fast-paced combination of middle school realism and fairy tale fantasy."
Shelby shared that her family moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, when she was one and a half years old. She described herself as an "outspoken goofball" with a loud laugh. She loved books so much that she learned to be quieter in the library.
In fifth grade, she wrote her first novel. It was about a girl who saved the world from aliens. After that, she always kept notebooks and pens nearby to write stories. By age twenty, she had written seven books. Six were children's fantasy, and one was for adults. She saw these as great practice for her future writing career.
Moving Around and Finding Inspiration
After graduating from Vassar College in 2008, Shelby moved to New York City. She attended the Columbia Publishing Course. Then, she worked for a year as an assistant editor for children's books.
In August 2009, she felt a strong desire to write. She had many ideas for a story about a school for fairy tale characters. She moved to Montana and wrote full-time in a small cabin. However, bears visiting her porch made her decide to move again.
She returned to her hometown, Charlotte, North Carolina. There, she worked on Of Giants and Ice and Of Witches and Wind. After a year, she felt like traveling again. She drove her car up the West Coast for four months. She explored new places to live. She chose Portland, Oregon, as the best fit for her. She plans to stay there for a long time.
What Shelby Enjoys Doing
Shelby is currently working on the fourth book in The Ever Afters series. In her free time, she loves to read. She also explores her new hometown. She enjoys cooking tasty, even if unhealthy, dishes. She knits complicated quilts and, not surprisingly, loves to travel.
