Shiki (磯城郡, Shiki-gun) is a special area called a district in Nara Prefecture, Japan. It is located near the city of Nara.

For a long time, Shiki District was a very important place in ancient Japan. It was sometimes chosen as the location for the Emperor's home, known as an Imperial Palace. This made Shiki a central spot for the country's rulers.

A Place for Emperors

Throughout history, several emperors had their palaces in the Shiki District. This shows how important this area was for the early leaders of Japan.

  • During the time of Emperor Nintoku, his palace was called Shikishima no miya.
  • Later, Emperor Yōmei had his palace, the Iwareikebe no Namitsuki Palace, in this district.
  • Even Emperor Sushun lived here, at a palace known as Kurahashi no Shibagaki Palace, or Kurabashi no miya.

Having these palaces meant that Shiki District was like a capital city at different times. It was where important decisions were made and where the emperor lived and ruled.
