Shinta Chō facts for kids
Shinta Chō (born September 24, 1927, died June 25, 2005) was a famous Japanese author and artist. He created many wonderful books for children. He won a big award, the Japan Picture Book Awards Grand Prize, in 1981 for his book Kyabetsu-kun, which means Cabbage Boy.
About Shinta Chō's Life
Shinta Chō was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1928. His birth name was Shuji Suzuki. He started drawing cartoons in the late 1940s. In 1959, he created a cartoon called Talkative Fried Egg for a magazine. He also wrote many children's books. One of his well-known books is The Gas We Pass: The Story of Farts. It was first published in Japan in 1978 and later in the USA in 1994.
Awards and Recognition
Shinta Chō received many awards for his amazing work. Here are some of them:
- 1959 - He won the Bungei Shunju Manga Award for Oshaberi na tamagoyaki (The Talkative Omelet).
- 1974 - He received an honorable mention in the Hans Christian Andersen Awards for Oshaberi na tamagoyaki (The Talkative Omelet). This is a very important international award for children's literature.
- 1977 - He won the Kodansha Publication Culture Award for Children's Picture Books. This was for his book Haru desu yo, Fukurō Obasan (Spring Is Here, Auntie Owl).
- 1981 - He won the Japan Picture Book Awards Grand Prize for Kyabetsu-kun (Cabbage Boy).
- 1986 - He won an award for his book Sakasama raion (Upside-Down Lion).
- 1994 - He was given Japan's Medal with Purple Ribbon. This special medal recognized his great work as an artist and illustrator.
- 1999 - He won a Japanese Picture Book Award for Gomu-atama Pontarō (Rubber-Headed Pontarō).
- 2002 - He won the ExxonMobil Children’s Culture Award.
