The Shippen House is a very old and important house in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. It's made of limestone and has two and a half stories. This house was built in different stages over many years.

The Story of Shippen House

How the House Grew Over Time

The oldest part of Shippen House was built around 1750. This first section was about 28 feet wide and 32 feet deep. The house was built by Edward Shippen, III. He was the person who planned out the town of Shippensburg. He would visit the house often for his trading businesses.

In 1785, a new section with two more rooms was added to the house. Later, in 1935, a two-story brick addition was built at the back. This was part of a big project to fix up and restore the house. During this time, a fancy classical porch was also added to the front.

Who Lived in Shippen House?

A famous person named Anne Shippen was born in this house in 1763. Her parents, William and Alice Shippen, lived there. William Shippen was a teacher who gave lessons on anatomy and midwifery. He had a special lecture hall right next to the house.

Anne Shippen later returned to the house as Mrs. Livingston. She started writing in a journal in 1783, sharing her thoughts and experiences.

A Historic Landmark

Because of its long history, Shippen House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. The house is also part of the larger Shippensburg Historic District, which includes many other old buildings in the area.
