Shrum Mound is an ancient Native American burial mound located in Campbell Memorial Park in Columbus, Ohio. This special mound was built about 2,000 years ago by the Adena culture, a group of Native Americans who lived in North America before Christopher Columbus arrived. In 1970, Shrum Mound was added to the National Register of Historic Places, which helps protect important historical sites.

What is Shrum Mound?

Shrum Mound is named after the Shrum family, who used to own the land where the mound stands. Today, the Ohio History Connection takes care of the mound. They received the property as a gift from a former Ohio governor, James E. Campbell. The park where the mound is located, Campbell Park, is also named after Governor Campbell.

Who Were the Adena People?

The Adena culture was a group of Native Americans who lived in parts of Ohio, Indiana, West Virginia, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania. They existed from about 1000 BCE to 200 CE. The Adena people are known for building large earthworks, including burial mounds like Shrum Mound. These mounds were often used for burying their dead and for special ceremonies.

Why Are Mounds Important?

Mounds like Shrum Mound are very important because they teach us about the people who lived long ago. They are like giant history books made of earth. By studying these mounds, archaeologists can learn about the Adena culture's beliefs, how they lived, and what tools they used.

Protecting Shrum Mound

In 2015, the Ohio History Connection decided to remove about 18 trees that were growing on top of Shrum Mound. This was done to help preserve the mound. One big concern was that a strong storm could knock down a tree, which might damage the ancient earthwork underneath. Removing the trees helps keep the mound safe for many more years.
