Shuaibu Amodu (born April 18, 1958, died June 10, 2016) was a famous Nigerian football player and coach. He played as a forward, which means he was usually trying to score goals for his team.
Playing Football
Shuaibu Amodu was a striker, a player who focuses on scoring goals. He played for two football clubs in Nigeria: Dumez and Niger Tornadoes. Sadly, his time as a player ended when he broke his leg.
Coaching Career
After his playing days, Amodu became a football coach. He managed several club teams in Nigeria. These included BCC Lions, El-Kanemi Warriors, and Shooting Stars. He also coached Orlando Pirates in South Africa.
Coaching Nigeria's National Team
Amodu coached the Nigerian national team several times. His first time was from April 2001 to February 2002. He felt it was unfair when he was removed from the job.
He was asked to coach the team again in April 2008. By December 2009, there was a lot of pressure on him. He was let go from the job in February 2010.
In May 2013, Amodu was made the technical director for Nigeria's national teams. This meant he helped guide how all the national teams played.
He became the manager of the Nigerian team again in October 2014. This was his fifth time in charge! However, another coach, Stephen Keshi, returned to the role two weeks later. When Keshi was fired in July 2015, Amodu took over the team temporarily. He was then replaced by Sunday Oliseh later that month.
Later Life and Passing
Shuaibu Amodu passed away on June 10, 2016. This was just three days after the death of another well-known Nigerian football figure, Stephen Keshi.
