Shudraka (pronounced Shood-ra-ka) was an ancient Indian writer. Three Sanskrit plays are said to have been written by him. These include Mrichchhakatika (which means The Little Clay Cart), Vinavasavadatta, and a short one-act play called Padmaprabhritaka.

The introduction to Mrichchhakatika says that Shudraka was a king. Some people think he might have been an Abhira king from the 200s CE. However, other experts believe that Shudraka was not a real person, and we don't truly know who wrote the plays attributed to him.

Was Shudraka a Real Person?

Historians haven't found any records of a king named Shudraka. The name "Shudraka" actually means "little servant." This has led to some interesting ideas about who he might have been.

The "Little Servant" Idea

The first four acts of Mrichchhakatika are very similar to an unfinished play called Charudattam by another famous writer named Bhāsa. One idea is that the real author of Mrichchhakatika simply finished Bhasa's play. Out of respect for Bhasa, this author might have called himself "Shudraka," meaning Bhasa's "little servant."

The Mystery of Authorship

Many scholars, like Farley P. Richmond, believe that Shudraka was probably a legendary figure. This means he might have been a character in stories rather than a real person. So, the true author of the plays linked to Shudraka remains a mystery.

The Abhira King Theory

Another idea, first suggested by Sten Konow, is that "Shudraka" was a pen name. A pen name is a fake name used by a writer. Konow thought Shudraka might have been a 3rd-century Abhira king, possibly Shivadatta, who was the father of Ishvarasena.

Here are some reasons why this theory might be true:

  • The Abhiras took over from the Satavahanas, who were also called Andhras. An old legend says Shudraka was an "Āndhrabhṛtya," which means a servant or vassal of the Andhras. Other stories say a king named Satavahana gave Shudraka half of his kingdom.
  • Some old texts mention that Shudraka was born in the Ashmaka region or Pratishthana. These places are in the same area. Shudraka was one of the first playwrights to use Maharashtri Prakrit in his plays, which was the language spoken in that region.
  • An ancient text called the Skandapurana places Shudraka around 188 CE. This time period is close to when the Abhira kings ruled.
  • In his play, Shudraka praises the god Shiva. The names of the Abhira kings, known from old writings, suggest that they were followers of Shiva.
