Sir Sidney Frederic Harmer (born March 9, 1862 – died October 22, 1950) was an important British zoologist. A zoologist is a scientist who studies animals. He was also a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, which is a special honor given by the British King or Queen for great achievements.
Sir Sidney's Work with Animals
Sir Sidney Harmer was a very respected scientist who spent his life studying animals. He was the head of the Linnean Society from 1927 to 1931. This society is a famous group for people who study nature. In 1934, he received the Linnean Medal for his excellent work.
He worked at several important museums. From 1892 to 1908, he was the Superintendent at the Cambridge University Museum of Zoology. This means he was in charge of the museum's animal collections. Later, he moved to the Natural History Museum in London. He was the Keeper of Zoology there from 1909 to 1921. He then became the Director of the entire museum from 1919 to 1927.
Sir Sidney's personal library, full of his research books, is now kept at the National Marine Biological Library. This library is part of the Marine Biological Association in Plymouth, England.
His Family Life
Sir Sidney Harmer was given the title of KBE in 1920. This was a special award for his important work during the time of World War I.
He had a son named Russell Harmer. Russell was a talented sailor who won a gold medal for Britain. Sir Sidney was also the great-uncle of Juliet Harmer. She is an actress and writer, famous for her role in the 1960s TV show Adam Adamant Lives!.
