Sidney Jellicoe (born August 25, 1906 – died November 24, 1973) was an important British-Canadian scholar, teacher, and priest. He was known for his work studying the Bible. He held special titles like dean emeritus and professor of Divinity.

About Sidney Jellicoe

Sidney Jellicoe was a very smart student at St Chad's College in Durham, England. After he became a priest in 1934, he worked in churches in England for 11 years.

Later, he taught at Bishop Otter Training College in Chichester for eight years. In 1952, he moved to Canada and became a Dean and Professor at Bishop's University in Quebec. He continued to rise in his career, becoming Dean of Theology in 1966. In 1971, he became Dean Emeritus, which means he held the title of dean even after retiring. He also led the Division of Graduate Studies.

Sidney Jellicoe received special honorary degrees for his achievements. In 1955, he was given a Doctor of Divinity degree, and in 1970, he received a Doctor of Civil Law degree from Bishop's University. These degrees were given to him to honor his great contributions, not because he studied for them.

He was also one of the people who helped start the International Organization for Septuagint and Cognate Studies (IOSCS). This group focuses on studying the Septuagint, which is an ancient Greek translation of the Old Testament.

His Books and Articles

Sidney Jellicoe wrote many articles for academic magazines, such as New Testament Studies and the Catholic Biblical Quarterly. These were places where scholars shared their research.

In 1968, he published his most important book about the Septuagint. It was called The Septuagint and Modern Study and was published by Oxford Clarendon Press. This book became a key resource for anyone studying the Septuagint in the 20th century.
