What Happened in the Siege?
The Siege of Jerusalem was a long and difficult battle. The Roman army, led by General Titus, surrounded the city. This meant no food or supplies could get in, making life very hard for the people inside.
Why the War Started
The First Jewish–Roman War began because of many disagreements and tensions between the Jewish people living in Judea and the Roman rulers. The Jewish people wanted to be free from Roman rule, and they rebelled. The Romans, who were in charge, wanted to keep control.
Life Inside Jerusalem
During the siege, the people inside Jerusalem suffered greatly. There was not enough food, and many people became very hungry. On top of that, different groups of Jewish fighters inside the city sometimes fought among themselves, which made it even harder to defend against the Romans.
The Fall of the City
After many months, the Roman army finally broke through Jerusalem's strong walls. They fought their way into the city. The fighting was very fierce.
The Destruction of the Temple
The most tragic part of the siege was the destruction of the Second Temple. This Temple was the most important holy place for Jewish people. It was a beautiful and grand building. The Romans completely destroyed it. This event was a huge loss for the Jewish people and is still remembered today.
Results of the Siege
It is said that many people who were not soldiers died during the siege. About 60,000 Jewish people were taken captive by the Romans. They were forced into slavery, meaning they had to work for the Romans against their will. The destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple had a lasting impact on Jewish history and culture.
