Early Life and Business

Sir Sills John Gibbons was born in 1809 in Chatham, Kent. His father was Richard Gibbons. As he grew up, Sills John Gibbons became a successful hop merchant. This meant he bought and sold hops, which are special flowers used to make beer.

Public Service in London

Gibbons became very involved in the public life of London. In 1862, he was chosen as an Alderman for the Castle Baynard area. An Alderman is like a senior member of a city council, helping to make decisions for the city.

From 1868 to 1871, he was a member of the Metropolitan Board of Works. This group was very important for London. They helped manage big public projects like building sewers, roads, and bridges to make the city a better place to live.

In 1865, Gibbons was appointed a Sheriff of London. This was another important official job, working closely with the Lord Mayor to help keep order and manage city events.

Becoming Lord Mayor

The biggest role Sir Sills John Gibbons took on was becoming the Lord Mayor of London. He served as the 543rd Lord Mayor from 1871 to 1872. The Lord Mayor is the head of the City of London Corporation, which is like the local government for the historic heart of London. It's a very old and respected position.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1872, after his time as Lord Mayor, Sir Sills John Gibbons was given a special title: he became a baronet of Sittingbourne. A baronet is a title of honor, similar to a knight, but it can sometimes be passed down through the family.

Sir Sills John Gibbons was married to Ann, the daughter of William Crookes. He passed away in 1876 in Hastings and was buried in Hastings cemetery. Sadly, he faced some financial difficulties towards the end of his life. Because he had no sons, the baronetcy title ended when he died.
