The Story of Siloh Chapel
How Siloh Chapel Started
Siloh Chapel began in 1887. A group of about fifty people, led by Reverend David Onllwyn Brace, decided to form their own church. They had previously been part of another church called Bethel, Gadlys.
At first, the group met in different places. They held their meetings at the Swan Coffee Tavern. They also met at the home of a person named Richard Wigley. As more people joined, the group needed a bigger space. They then moved their meetings to the Park School.
Building the Chapel
The first Siloh Chapel building opened in April 1890. Special services were held over two days to celebrate. Several reverends, including J. Rees, A. T. Jenkins, and W. G. Williams, gave sermons.
A new, larger chapel was built in 1902. It was designed by an architect named Thomas Roderick. Two years later, in 1904, a gallery was added inside the chapel.
Chapel Membership
Siloh Chapel was not as big as some other churches nearby. In 1905, there were 154 members. By 1930, the number of members was 138.
Long-Serving Minister
Reverend J. Sulgwyn Davies was the minister at Siloh Chapel for a very long time. He served the church for 43 years, from 1891 until 1934. He passed away in 1939.
Later Years and Closure
In 1988, another local chapel called Carmel closed down. Members from Carmel then came to worship at Siloh Chapel. However, Siloh Chapel itself closed its doors in 1996.
