Sylvia Elvira Infantas Soto (born June 14, 1923 – died June 19, 2024) was a famous Chilean singer, actress, and folklorist. She was known for her beautiful voice and for helping to make Chilean folk music popular.

Early Life and Beginnings
Silvia Infantas was born in Santiago, Chile, in 1923. Her father was a tenor, a type of singer. She grew up in a neighborhood called El Almendral in the city of Valparaíso.
A Star in Music
Silvia Infantas started her singing career in 1942. She performed on many radio stations, which were very popular at the time. In 1943, a magazine called Radiomanía named her the best "melodic singer."
She became very well-known for singing Chilean folk music. She led two important music groups:
- Silvia Infantas y los Baqueanos (from 1953 to 1959)
- Silvia Infantas y los Cóndores (from 1960 to 1969)
In 1962, Silvia Infantas and Los Cóndores won first place at the Viña del Mar International Song Festival. They performed a song called "El loro aguafiestas."
Silvia Infantas was a very important person in Chilean folk music from 1942 to 1970. She traveled to many countries to perform, including Argentina, Uruguay, Peru, and Germany.
In 1955, a composer named Vicente Bianchi created music for poems by the famous writer Pablo Neruda. Silvia Infantas and Los Baqueanos recorded these songs, like "Tonadas de Manuel Rodríguez." Their album Música para la Historia de Chile is seen as a great contribution to Chilean culture.
Acting on Stage and Screen
Besides singing, Silvia Infantas was also a talented actress. She worked at the Teatro de Ensayo de la Universidad Católica (TEUC) from 1946 to 1952. She acted in many plays, such as Pygmalion and La pérgola de las flores.
In 1950, she won the Caupolicán Award for "best actress" for her role in the play La anunciación a María. She also appeared in the 1968 film Ayúdeme usted compadre.
Later Years and Passing
Silvia Infantas lived a long life. She turned 100 years old on June 14, 2023. She passed away in Santiago, Chile, on June 19, 2024, at the age of 101.
Awards and Special Honors
Silvia Infantas received many awards for her contributions to music and culture:
- In 2009, she was named "Figura Fundamental de la Música Chilena" (Fundamental Figure of Chilean Music) by the Chilean Society of Copyright (SCD).
- In 2015, she received the President of the Republic National Music Award in the "Folk Music" category. She was 92 years old when President Michelle Bachelet gave her this award at the La Moneda Palace.
In March 2019, a book about her life was published. It was called "Silvia Infantas, voz y melodía de Chile" (Silvia Infantas, voice and melody of Chile) and was written by music journalist David Ponce.
