Simón de León Leal (born 1610, died 1687) was a Spanish painter from the Baroque period. He was born in Madrid, Spain. His father, Diego de León Leal, was from the Catalonia region, and his mother was Juana de Durán.
Simón de León Leal learned to paint from Pedro de Las Cuevas. He became well-known for two main types of art:
- Portraits: Paintings of people.
- History paintings: Large paintings that show important events, often from the past or from religious stories.

What Kind of Art Did He Create?
Simón de León Leal painted many artworks for churches and religious groups. These paintings often showed important religious figures or events.
Paintings for Religious Groups
- For a group called the Premonstratensian Friars, he painted an altarpiece (a large artwork placed behind an altar in a church). This altarpiece showed Saint Norbert triumphing over Heresy. He also painted St. Norbert receiving vestments from the hands of the Virgin for them.
- For the Noviciado Gesuita church, he created an altarpiece with scenes from the Infancy of Christ. This means it showed moments from the early life of Jesus.
- For the Capuchins, another religious order, he painted an Immaculate Conception. This is a common theme in religious art, showing the Virgin Mary.
Painter to the Queen
Simón de León Leal was a very respected artist. He was even chosen to be the official painter for the queen of Spain. This was a very important job and showed how talented he was.
He passed away in Madrid in 1687.
