Who Was Simeon Mills?
The district is named after a very important person named Simeon Mills. He lived in the 1800s and owned many businesses in this area. Mills was not just a businessman; he was also a politician. He was a member of the Wisconsin State Senate. The State Senate is a group of elected officials who help make laws for the state of Wisconsin.
Simeon Mills also played a big part in starting what is now the University of Wisconsin–Madison. This is one of the largest and most well-known universities in the state!
Why Is It a Historic Place?
The Simeon Mills Historic District was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 25, 1987. This is a list kept by the United States government of places that are important to American history. Being on this list helps protect these places so they can be enjoyed and learned from for many years to come.
Later, in 1989, the district was also added to the State Register of Historic Places for Wisconsin. This means it's recognized as a special historical site by the state itself.
