Critically endangered, possibly extinct (IUCN 3.1)
Scientific classification

The Sinú parakeet (Pyrrhura subandina) is a small, colorful bird that belongs to the parrot family. It is known for living in the Sinú Valley in Colombia, South America. This parakeet is very rare, and scientists are worried it might already be extinct.

Scientists have different ideas about the Sinú parakeet. Some groups, like BirdLife International, believe it is a unique species of its own. Other groups, such as the International Ornithological Committee, think it is a type of painted parakeet.

Where the Sinú Parakeet Lives

The Sinú parakeet has only been found in the Sinú Valley in northern Colombia. This area is known for its dry forests.

Scientists have found 18 specimens of this parakeet from four different places in Colombia. Sadly, two of these places have lost their forests, which means the parakeets no longer have a home there.

Why the Sinú Parakeet is So Rare

The Sinú parakeet is incredibly rare. Experts believe that if any are still alive, there might be fewer than 50 left. This makes it one of the most endangered birds in the world.

The last time anyone officially saw a Sinú parakeet was in 1949. Since then, even with many searches, no one has been able to confirm seeing one. Because of this, the Sinú parakeet is on a list of 25 "most wanted lost" species. This means that organizations like Global Wildlife Conservation are actively searching for it.

What We Don't Know About This Bird

Scientists know very little about the Sinú parakeet. They don't know much about how it reproduces, what it eats, or how it lives in its environment. Learning more about these things would help protect any parakeets that might still exist.
