Meet Sinbad Jr. and His Adventures
Sinbad Jr. is the brave teenage son of the legendary sailor, Sinbad the Sailor. He sails the world in his trusty single-masted boat, always looking for new adventures and ways to help others. He often faces tricky villains, like the big, black-bearded Blubbo, and the clever but misguided Dr. Rotcoddam (which is "mad doctor" spelled backward!).
Sinbad Jr. has a secret weapon: a magic belt! When he tightens it, the diamond buckle flashes like lightning. This gives him the strength of 50 men, turning him into a powerful hero for a short time.
His best friend and first mate on his boat is Salty the Parrot. Salty is a lively and funny bird who always joins Sinbad Jr. on his exciting journeys.
How the Show Was Made
The idea for Sinbad Jr. and His Magic Belt began in 1960 with a company called Sam Singer's production company. Initially, Dal McKennon provided the voice for Sinbad Jr.
Later, American International Pictures, which owned the rights to the "Sinbad" name for movies, teamed up with Hanna-Barbera. This famous animation studio then took over the production of the series. Tim Matheson became the new voice for Sinbad Jr. The cartoons you see today include episodes made by both original studios.
The show first aired on September 11, 1965. Each daily TV program usually showed three five-minute cartoons. The series ran through 1966. At one point, the show was even called Sinbad Jr., the Sailor to avoid confusion with another cartoon movie.
The Catchy Theme Song
The fun theme song for Sinbad Jr. and His Magic Belt was created by Ted Nichols. It's a special version of an older children's song called "Sailing, Sailing (Over the Bounding Main)." This original song was written way back in 1880 by a composer named James Frederick Swift. Later versions of the cartoon's theme song even had a more modern, jazzy sound!
Episode Format
When Sinbad Jr. and His Magic Belt aired, each daily television package typically included three exciting five-minute cartoons. This meant viewers got a triple dose of adventure every time!
