The poster for the movie

Sintel is a short, 15-minute computer-animated movie. It was made using special computer programs that are open source, meaning anyone can use and change them for free. The main program used to create Sintel was Blender.

Work on the movie started in September 2009. It was officially released on September 28, 2010, and you could download it online two days later. The movie was first called Projet Durian, named after a fruit that smells very strong! Later, its name was changed to Sintel. This word comes from the Dutch language and can mean 'cinder' or 'ember' – like a glowing piece of wood after a fire.

The Story of Sintel

Sintel tells the story of a young girl. She lives in a made-up city. One day, a dragon lands on a roof near her. The dragon is hurt, so Sintel helps it. She names the dragon Scales, and they become very good friends.

One day, Scales flies off to chase some birds. Then, a much bigger dragon appears and takes Scales away. Sintel bravely decides to go look for her friend. She searches for a long time.

Sintel's Journey

Sintel travels through different places to find Scales. She faces many challenges on her journey. Finally, she finds the big dragon in a special Dragon Blood tree. Sintel fights the large dragon and defeats it.

A Sad Ending

After the fight, Sintel discovers a sad truth. The big dragon she fought and killed was actually Scales, her friend. Scales had grown up and changed into the larger dragon. The movie ends with Sintel feeling very sad because she accidentally killed her own friend.

How Sintel Was Made

The idea for Sintel was announced in May 2009 by Ton Roosendaal. He is the head of the Blender Foundation. The Blender Foundation is a group that supports the Blender software.

Funding the Project

The movie project got money from two main sources. The Blender Foundation helped pay for it. The Netherlands Film Fund also gave money to support the movie.

A big part of the money came from people who bought the movie's DVD before it was even finished. These people were called "pre-orderers." Everyone who pre-ordered the DVD before September 1, 2010, had their name listed in the movie's credits. This helped the Blender Foundation raise a lot of the money needed to make Sintel.

Release and Availability

The movie was released for everyone to download online. You could find it on the official Durian Project website starting October 1, 2010. This made it easy for people all over the world to watch Sintel.
