The Sioux Valley Dakota Nation (SVDN) is a group of Dakota people. They are also known as Sioux. Their traditional name is Wipazoka Wakpa, which means 'Saskatoon River'. This name comes from the many Saskatoon bushes that grow along the river. This First Nation community lives west of Brandon, Manitoba, in Canada.
About 2,400 people are part of the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation. Around 1,080 of these people live on their main land area, called a reserve. This reserve is located near the southeast corner of the Rural Municipality of Wallace - Woodworth.
About the Sioux Valley Dakota Nation
The Sioux Valley Dakota Nation is a self-governing community. They are part of the Dakota Ojibway Tribal Council. This council helps different Dakota and Ojibway communities work together. Their main office is in Griswold, Manitoba. The current chief is Jennifer Bone.
Their Land Reserves
The Sioux Valley Dakota Nation has two main land areas, called reserves. These are special lands set aside for First Nations people.
- Sioux Valley Dakota Nation — This is their main reserve. It is about 38.2 square kilometers (9,400 acres) in size.
- Fishing Station 62A — This is a smaller reserve. They share this land with two other First Nations: the Birdtail Sioux First Nation and the Canupawakpa Dakota First Nation.
