Early Life and Family

Arthur Chichester was the second son of Sir John Chichester, 1st Baronet. His mother was Mary Colly, who was his father's second wife. When his older brother, Sir John Chichester, 2nd Baronet, passed away in September 1680, Arthur became the 3rd Baronet. A "Baronet" is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

In 1684, Arthur Chichester married Elizabeth Drewe. Her father was Thomas Drewe of Broadhembury Grange. Around the same time, he sold his family's old estate called Raleigh. He then bought a new home at Youlston Park, which was close to the town of Barnstaple. After moving, he became a "freeman" of Barnstaple. This meant he had special rights and privileges in the town.

Political Career

Sir Arthur Chichester began his political journey in 1685. He was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP) for the town of Barnstaple. An MP is someone elected to represent their area in the House of Commons, where laws are made.

He was elected again in 1689 to a special meeting of Parliament called the Convention Parliament. After that, he did not run for election in 1690 and was not in Parliament for some time. However, he was elected again for Barnstaple in the general election of 1713. A "general election" is when people across the country vote for their representatives. He was elected without anyone running against him in the 1715 general election.

Later Life and Legacy

Sir Arthur Chichester passed away on February 3, 1718. He had a large family, with four sons and six daughters. After his death, his son, John, took over the Baronetcy. John also followed in his father's footsteps and became an MP for Barnstaple.
