Early Life and Family

Arthur Shaen was the son of Sir James Shaen, 1st Baronet. His mother was Frances FitzGerald. She was the daughter of a very important noble, George FitzGerald, 16th Earl of Kildare. This meant Arthur came from a family with strong connections.

A Career in Politics

Sir Arthur Shaen was a Member of Parliament (MP) for many years. An MP is a person elected to represent an area in the government. He represented the town of Lismore. He served in the Irish House of Commons, which was like the parliament for Ireland at that time. He was an MP from 1692 until he died in 1725.

On December 13, 1695, he became the 2nd Baronet. This happened after his father, the 1st Baronet, passed away. A baronet is a special title, like a knight, that can be passed down in a family.

Sir Arthur also served as a High Sheriff in different counties. A High Sheriff was a very important local official. They were in charge of keeping law and order in their county. He was the High Sheriff of County Mayo in 1708. He also served as the High Sheriff of County Roscommon in 1709 and again in 1718.

His Family and Legacy

Sir Arthur Shaen was married two times. His first wife was Jane Hele. She was the daughter of Sir Samuel Hele, who was also a Baronet. Later, he married Susanna Magan. With Susanna, he had two daughters.

When Sir Arthur Shaen passed away in 1725, he did not have any sons. Because of this, his special title of Baronet ended. It could not be passed on to anyone else in his family.
