Sir Charles Crisp, 5th Baronet facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sir Charles Crisp (born around 1680, died 1740) was an important English landowner. He also worked as a politician. He was a member of the House of Commons (like today's Parliament) for a short time, from 1721 to 1722. He was known as the 5th Baronet in his family.

Growing Up and Family Life

Charles Crisp was born around 1680. His father was Sir Nicholas Crisp, who was also a Baronet. Charles had a brother. In 1714, Charles married Anne Crispe. She was a distant cousin from his father's side of the family. Anne's father, Thomas Crispe, owned a large estate called Dornford in Oxfordshire. After Anne's father passed away in 1714, and then Anne herself passed away in 1718, Charles Crisp became the owner of the Dornford estate. In 1715, he took on an important local role. He became the High Sheriff of Oxfordshire. A High Sheriff was a bit like a county manager, responsible for law and order in the area.

Becoming a Politician

In 1721, Charles Crisp decided to run for a political position. He wanted to become a Member of Parliament (MP). An MP is someone who represents a certain area in the House of Commons. He ran in a special election called a by-election for the area of New Woodstock. He won this election on October 27, 1721. He had help from a very powerful person, the Duchess of Marlborough. However, his time as an MP was short. In the next big election in 1722, he lost his seat. He was defeated by Sir Thomas Wheate, who he had beaten just a year before.

Becoming a Baronet

On June 1, 1730, Charles Crisp received a special title. He became a Baronet. This happened after his nephew, Sir Nicholas Crispe, who was the 4th Baronet, passed away. The title then passed to Charles.

His Legacy

Sir Charles Crisp passed away on July 9, 1740. He did not have any children. Because of this, the title of Baronet in his family ended when he died. His estate, including the Dornford property, was then passed on to his female relatives. One of these relatives was Mary Crispe. She was the daughter of Sir John Crispe, who was the 3rd Baronet. Mary had married George Stonehouse in 1739.
