Sir Charles Gould Morgan was an important Welsh figure. He was born on February 4, 1760, and passed away on December 5, 1846. He served as a soldier and later became a politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) for two different areas: Brecon and the County of Monmouth.

Who Was Sir Charles Gould Morgan?

Sir Charles Gould Morgan was the second person in his family to hold the title of Baronet. This title is a special honor given by the King or Queen. His father was also named Sir Charles Morgan. His mother was Jane Morgan.

Early Life and Military Career

Sir Charles started his career in the military. He joined the Coldstream Guards as an ensign and lieutenant in 1777. This was a very famous part of the British Army. He became a lieutenant and captain in 1781.

During his time in the army, he was captured. This happened at Yorktown in 1781. He was later promoted to captain and lieutenant-colonel in 1790. He left the army in 1792.

Becoming a Politician

After leaving the military, Sir Charles became a politician. He was elected as an MP for Brecon from 1787 to 1796. Later, he represented the County of Monmouth from 1796 to 1831. He supported the government led by Lord Liverpool.

In 1792, he changed his last name to Morgan. This was the same year his father also adopted the name. In 1797, he inherited the large Tredegar estate from his mother. This estate had belonged to his uncle, John Morgan.

Sir Charles as a Landowner

In 1806, Sir Charles inherited his father's Baronet title. He also took over his father's role on the board of the Bedford Level Corporation. He served there from 1807 to 1827. He was also the Recorder for Newport from 1807 to 1835. A Recorder is a judge in a city.

A Good Landlord

Sir Charles was known as a good landlord. He owned a lot of land and rented it out. He held yearly cattle shows on his Tredegar Park estate. These shows helped farmers and showed off the best animals.

Even his political opponent, John Frost, said he was "a handsome little man" with "great power." By 1820, Sir Charles was earning about £40,000 a year. This money came from his estates and other investments.

In 1816, he became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This was because he invested in new ways to improve farming.
