Sir Cyril Wyche (born around 1695, died 1756) was an important English diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country in other nations. Sir Cyril worked for Great Britain in places like Hamburg and Russia, helping to manage relationships between countries. He was also the first Baronet of Chewton, a special title given by the King or Queen.
Sir Cyril's Early Life
Cyril Wyche was the only son of John Wyche and Bethesda Savage. His father, John Wyche, was also a diplomat who worked in Hamburg. Cyril came from a family of diplomats. His grandfather, Sir Peter Wyche, was an ambassador to Russia and Poland. His great-grandfather, another Sir Peter Wyche, was an ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. Cyril's grand-uncle, Sir Cyril Wyche, was a Member of Parliament and a Chief Secretary for Ireland.
His Diplomatic Career
Sir Cyril started his career very young. When he was just nineteen, Queen Anne appointed him as a Chargé d'Affaires in Hamburg. This meant he was in charge of the British office there. He took over from his father, who had passed away in 1713.
When King George I became king in 1714, he continued to give Sir Cyril important roles in Hamburg. Over the years, Sir Cyril was promoted to Resident, then Minister, and finally Envoy Extraordinary to Lower Saxony. While he was in Hamburg, his secretary, Mathyson, even had the famous musician George Frideric Handel as his music teacher!
In 1729, King George II gave Sir Cyril the special title of Baronet of Chewton. This made him Sir Cyril Wyche, 1st Baronet. From 1729 to 1730, he also served as the High Sheriff of Norfolk, which was an important local government role.
Later, in 1741, Sir Cyril was appointed as the Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Russia. This was a very important job, representing Great Britain in the Russian court. He served in Russia until 1744.
Family Life
In 1714, Sir Cyril married Anne von Wedderkop. Her father, Magnus von Wedderkop, was a Prime Minister to the Duke of Holstein. As a wedding gift, Anne's father gave them a property called Tangstedt.
Sir Cyril and Anne had four children:
- Magnus Wyche: He was a soldier in the British Army but sadly passed away young and unmarried.
- John Wyche: He also died when he was young.
- Frederike Wyche: She married Magnus von Holmer, who was a Councilor of State to the Duke of Holstein.
- Amelia Wyche.
Because Sir Cyril did not have any sons who lived to inherit his title, the Baronet title ended when he passed away in Tangstedt in 1756. His daughter, Frederike, inherited the Tangstedt property.
