Sir Duncan Alexander Dundas Campbell (born December 4, 1856 – died May 27, 1926) was an important Scottish figure. He was a soldier in the British Army, a historian who wrote many books, and an "officer of arms." This last role meant he helped manage things like coats of arms and family histories. He was the 3rd Baronet in his family, which is a special title passed down through generations.

Who Was Sir Duncan Campbell?

Sir Duncan Campbell was born into a well-known family. His father was Sir Alexander Campbell, the 2nd Baronet. When his father passed away in 1880, Duncan inherited the title and became the 3rd Baronet.

Early Life and Military Career

Sir Duncan started his career as a soldier. He joined a famous Scottish regiment called the Black Watch. This was a very respected part of the British Army.

Later, from 1884 to 1895, he had a special role called Gentleman Usher of the Green Rod. This was a ceremonial job, often connected to royal events.

Sir Duncan left the army in 1893. He retired with the rank of Honorary Major. He had served with the 3rd and 4th Battalions of the Highland Light Infantry.

A Role in Scottish History

After his military career, Sir Duncan took on other important roles. From 1907 until his death in 1926, he was a Carrick Pursuivant. This is a special officer who works for the Court of the Lord Lyon in Scotland. The Lord Lyon is in charge of Scottish heraldry, which means coats of arms and family badges.

Sir Duncan was also a member of the Royal Company of Archers. This is a group that serves as the King's or Queen's bodyguards in Scotland.

In 1909, Sir Duncan was given a special honor. He was made a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order (CVO). This award is given by the King or Queen for personal service. At the time, he was working as the Secretary for the Order of the Thistle, another very old and important Scottish order of chivalry.

A Passion for History

Sir Duncan Campbell was also a dedicated historian. He loved to research and write about Scottish families and their military history. He wrote several books, including:

  • The Clan Campbell
  • Records of Clan Campbell in the Military Service of the Honourable East India Company from 1600-1858
  • Officers of the Clan Campbell in Army and Royal Marines from 1660–1924

These books helped to record the history of his own family, the Clan Campbell, and their contributions to the military.
